Last weekend, while we where out chasing the NS F units and OCS South, we also had the good fortune to shoot the 143 at several places. 143 had a former N&W SD40-2 leading, and that was just about as good as the show horses in my opinion. SD40-2's are still not "rare" but you just don't see that many leading road trains any more. Its sad to say, but the F units may be a easier catch than a 40 in the upcoming years.

We also bagged another Southbound Unit ethanol train, NS 60W, with a UP motor leading... Check the link for the pics

this is a cool shot but it brings up a question. i've heard some where the the southern used the frames out of scraped cars to build signal bridges. anyone else heard this story?

Here in Glenfield Pa we are still seeing a fair amount of SD 40-2'S even in the lead especially on the trash trains.

The "old school" overhead signal bridges, like the one there in my Shot at Kings Mountain, where made from the center sills of retired freight cars. If you look on some of them, you can see the oblong slots where the brake rigging passed through.

thanks mr bell. ain't nothin like the old southern. now to get back on track, ain't nothin like a SD 40-2. the only thing that would have made that shot better would be to turn the SD around, put a high hood on it and dress it in a tux. oh well, i know i'm livin in the past.
