I have always been one that enjoyed getting up extra early and getting out shooting in the warm glow of a new day. Sundays seem to be a good day for such things, and in a small town or out in the country is even better. The roads are all but empty, stores closed, folks sleeping in and getting ready for church, and then the sound of a horn and freight moving through.  Johnny Cash, in one of my favorite songs, says "'Cause there's something in a Sunday, That makes a body feel alone.,And there's nothing short a' dying, That's half as lonesome as the sound, Of the sleeping city sidewalk, And Sunday morning coming down.

Sunday Morning, September 5th, 2010, Harrodsburg, KY in the hour after sunrise.

Westbound NS 895, one of our rare coal train moves, eases through the big S-Curve in the middle of town as the grounds keeper at the local funeral home takes a break from sweeping the sidewalk to watch the train pass.

Shortly after the coal train, another Westbound, 22A, crosses the empty main drag as the sun finally rises above the hill.

30 minutes later, as the town starts to stir, Eastbound 376 starts through town and the run down the middle of College Street.

376 is working hard to get back to track speed as the leave Harrodsburg behind them...

E.M.,

Great stuff.  I really enjoyed these photos.  You really hit the jackpot in train movements last Sunday.

Thanks for the headsup in NS-CSX Appalachia.
